Steve Brine met with Chloe Sideserf, of Cafod, at one of his Chandler's Ford constituency surgeries on Friday 7th July, as they discussed Cafod's Power To Be campaign.
They met during The Climate Coalition's 'Speak Up Week of Action' to talk about tackling climate change. This occurs each year as an opportunity for constituents to meet with their MP to share ideas on how we can work together to help protect our environment and the UK can work to stop climate change.
Chloe told Mr Brine that with one in six people still living without electricity, the hopes of millions of the world's children are too often a distant dream. She said that local, renewable energy is usually the cheapest, fastest and most efficient solution to bring power to the poorest communities, and Cafod believe it can help families to lift themselves out of poverty, without harming the world we share.
Speaking afterwards, Chloe said: "The UK already spends money on energy access for the poorest communities through the World Bank, but currently less than 3% of World Bank energy spending supports the kind of energy that tackles poverty.
"I am delighted that Steve has offered to write to the UK's representative at the World Bank, Melanie Robinson, to help me make the case for shifting the balance to support renewable energy which tackles poverty, so everyone can have the chance to fulfil their God-given potential."
Steve Brine said: "I very much enjoyed meeting with Cafod, and discussing their work around their Power To Be campaign. We had a really constructive talk, and have come away with some agreed action points to work on."
