Swift action from Winchester MP Steve Brine has helped a flood-hit playgroup, which had been facing a long period of closure, to re-open after half-term.
Following extensive flooding in the village of Twyford, including at the parish hall, the Twyford Playgroup was forced to close last week, and initial fears were that a quick relocation to the Pavilion at Hunters Park may not have been possible due to cumbersome Ofsted procedures.
Steve Brine said: "When I first spoke to Ofsted, following discussions with worried parents last week, I was told that sometimes, applications to re-register can take up to 26 weeks. This was just unacceptable to me and completely contrary to the way pretty much every other agency has risen to the significant challenges of these floods. They just didn't seem to see any urgency in the situation but we did, especially working parents who rely on the playground being open next week after half-term.
"I spoke personally to Michael Gove over the weekend and he has been brilliant in putting some urgency into Ofsted's procedures."
The playgroup's application for re-registration has been received and processed by Ofsted and the group have now been contacted by the agency directly. An Ofsted inspector will be visiting the premises within the next 48 hours and an email to Mr Brine from the Secretary of State stated 'we have been reassured that this should lead to the new setting being registered by the end of the week, ready to open again after half term'.
Celine Steger, from the playgroup, added; "We are absolutely overwhelmed with enthusiasm and all the parents are really impressed at the result. A really big thank you to Steve for what he has done here, and we cannot wait to reopen."
