Steve Brine MP has warned that Winchester must not be ‘side-lined’ as Southampton Airport consults on a new Masterplan for the next 20 years to extend the runway, routes and improve the passenger terminal.
The Winchester MP has been made aware of the fears of residents in the south his constituency that noise procedures may not be adequate, and that Eastleigh Borough Council, which hosts the site of the airport, is not duty bound to address concerns of adjacent councils such as Winchester.
He said: “I want this to be an opportunity for residents across Otterbourne and the wider Downlands district to be able to have meaningful input as the airport, which is undoubtedly very important for our local economy, looks to develop. SIA have engaged well and I know genuinely want to work with all local MPs but Eastleigh must involve its neighbours on matters that impact cross-border, unlike we’ve seen with the current Local Plan process, because we must avoid a repeat of last time the airport expanded when the views of Winchester were side-lined.”
Cllr Jan Warwick, who represents the Downlands division, said: “I am mindful of both the economic benefits the airport brings to the region but we also need to consider the potential noise impact on our residents. I’m working hard with our MP and interested residents to ensure Winchester is heard.”
Winchester City Council's Environmental Team along with members of the Winchester Air Group will be responding formally to the consultation on behalf of the Winchester District residents.
