A Winnall pub has won a prestigious nationwide competition that honours their very 'cheery, colourful' garden.
The Golden Lion, run by Brid and Derek Phelan, won the National Best Pub Garden category of the Garden News Gardener of the Year competition, beating off competition from the Coach and Horses in Deal, Kent, and the Bridge Hotel in Thrapston, Northamptonshire.
Summing up, the judging panel said: "In these recession-hit times, businesses have to do everything they can to attract customers. In the pub trade, good beer, good food and a warm welcome are essential ingredients for success.
"Derek and Brid Phelan of The Golden Lion in Winchester provide all three - and that warm welcome starts with their cheery, colourful roadside display. If you drive past, you just can't help being enticed to pop in for some good traditional British fayre."
Local MP Steve Brine added: "I was delighted to hear Brid and Derek won this competition. They run a wonderful pub, and I have enjoyed popping in for a drink and chat when I've been out knocking on doors in Winnall. I really am so pleased for them, and send all my congratulations."
