Work will include the installation of floating islands, a new reed bed and new areas of planting around the existing island.
Chandler's Ford MP Steve Brine said: "I know how much Hiltingbury Lakes means to local residents and warmly welcome this project, which will I am sure improve the area for everyone who already enjoys it so much."
The work will be undertaken by Wessex Land and Water Ltd, and is expected to take around three weeks.
