Steve Brine joined members of the public and local councillors at the Guildhall on Friday 10th February for the Central Winchester Regeneration Community Planning Weekend Launch, the start of the important process which will result in a new regeneration strategy for Central Winchester.
JTP Architects has been appointed to prepare a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), to be adopted by Winchester City Council, that will set out the type and layout of land uses that could be built on the Central Winchester regeneration area to rejuvenate this prominent part of the City.
On Friday 24th and Saturday 25th March, the local community is invited to the Central Winchester Regeneration Community Planning Weekend to help create a Vision for the future regeneration of this prominent part of the city.
The regeneration area covers approximately 2.3 hectares in the heart of the city and includes the bus station, Friarsgate medical centre, Kings Walk and the Friarsgate car park, amongst other elements. The Council is seeking the comprehensive mixed use redevelopment of this area to improve the quality of buildings and public space.
Winchester City Council will work in close partnership with the wider community to design a development that will bring real benefits to local people and create a positive legacy for the city. To this end, the Council has appointed JTP as collaborative planning specialists to facilitate the Community Planning Weekend and create a Vision for the future regeneration of Central Winchester.
Steve Brine said: "This is a welcome fresh start for the badly needed regeneration of a large area of the city centre. It's a chance to put everything behind us and move together with a positive mindset to give Winchester what is deserves.
"This community planning process, culminating in the weekend of events next month, is the perfect way to involve the whole community and make a success of things this around. I hope everyone will leave cynicism at the door and help make this work.
