Winchester City Council's fleet of 23 refuse trucks have been named by local primary school pupils.
The competition to name the trucks was run by the City Council’s Environmental Health Service and was open to primary schools across the district.
The winning names came from pupils at Owslebury Primary School, St Bede’s, Winnall and Harestock primary schools, Winchester, and Ridgemead Junior School, Bishop’s Waltham.
The new names such as ‘Recyclops’, ‘Horris Nibbler’ and ‘Munchie’ will be put on the front of the refuse freighters over the coming weeks.
The new names are part of Winchester’s campaign to raise awareness of refuse and recycling issues – and follows the recent ‘Taste It Don’t Waste It’ food campaign.
Prospective Winchester MP, Steve Brine, said: "Children are very aware of waste and recycling and it is all credit to Winchester City Council that they came up with this idea to engage them in the work they do.
Cllr Frank Pearson, Winchester’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, added; "We had lots of suggestions and it was a tough job choosing just 23 names from the entries. We are really grateful for the schools and teachers who supported this competition and hope the children enjoy seeing their trucks out on the road!"
Winchester City Council was so impressed by the entries from pupils at Winnall Primary School that they have chosen to unveil the new names at their assembly (on Monday November 10 2008).
