Steve Brine wants to ensure that needless deaths from ovarian cancer are halted by urgent Government action after new research shows consistently woeful symptoms awareness amongst women.
As a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Ovarian Cancer, the Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP has been actively involved in calling for ovarian cancer to be included in national symptom awareness programmes.
Mr Brine said: "New evidence emerged from the Target Ovarian Cancer Pathfinder Study 2012, which reveals no change in important measures of women's awareness.
"Just 3% of the women polled were very confident at recognising a symptom of ovarian cancer, and sadly this represents no change from three years ago."
One in five women said they were 'not at all confident' about noticing a symptom of ovarian cancer, according to the statistics, which follow a major international benchmarking study which showed the UK has amongst the worst one-year survival rates for the disease in developed countries, a fact strongly linked to late diagnosis.
Mr Brine continued: "We believe women in the UK can't wait any longer. There is an urgent need to include ovarian cancer in the forthcoming programme of work, as women are dying every day because they didn't know the symptoms they had could be potentially serious.
"March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and I will be continuing press for this important work to take place."
