Local MP Steve Brine is calling for the personal tax limit to be raised to £10,000 as the coalition approaches Budget Day, on Wednesday 21st March.
Steve said: "I really feel that raising the tax limit for those who earn the very least is not only fair and just, but also a crucial way to generate growth back into the economy while we continue to deal with the deficit."
The Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP is leading the charge among Conservative MPs, writing to Chancellor George Osborne. He added that he has long-supported the ambition, going back to a report written by Lord Forsyth – for the then Shadow Chancellor - in 2006.
Steve continued: "Many Government MPs up here in the House agree with me on this and I will be pressing George Osborne in the coming weeks as he meets with MPs ahead of the Budget. I think the measure would be a real boost to the lower paid, and could be one of a number of measures the Chancellor has at his disposal to stimulate growth and deliver fairness. I know the measure would be warmly welcomed in Winchester where we have many people working in the public sector, often on a low wage."
"Tax cutting is in essence a moral creed, allowing people to keep more of their own money so they will have the choice on how, if and when to spend it. Starting with tax cuts for the poorest for who lower taxes would make the greatest difference at this time."
