HRH The Countess of Wessex performed the official opening of jacksplace@naomihouse on Tuesday 30th November 2010.
Sophie, wife of Prince Edward, was joined by a host of dignitaries, including the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan, The Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester and Steve Brine MP.
jacksplace offers hospice care to young adults, up to the age of 25, from across the central south of England. The new facility has been purpose built to give young people privacy, dignity and independence. It is only the third specialist hospice for young adults in England.
Steve, who is already looking forward to this year’s Santa Fun Run on Sunday, said: “I have visited Naomi House on so many occasions and seen Jacks Place from design to construction and completion. It is such a fantastic facility and I am so proud to have it based here in the constituency I represent. I take my hat off to the hundreds of people who have raised money to make this a reality and look forward to seeing it thrive in years to come.”
jacksplace has been made possible by the generous support of the local community and a legacy from local businessman Jack Witham, a retired surveyor who lived in a modest two-bedroom flat and bequeathed £6m to the hospice.
