Steve Brine met up with Angus Somerville on Friday 12th October, as he discussed the findings of the Independent Monitoring Board report into HMP Winchester.
Mr Somerville chairs the IMB, and Steve Brine, who recently visited the Romsey Road prison, was keen to meet with him to discuss the current situation.
The IMB is made up of independent, unpaid volunteers who work an average of 3-4 visits per month. Their role is to monitor the day-to-day life in their local prison and ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained.
Members have unrestricted access to their local prison or immigration detention centre at any time and can talk to any prisoner or detainee they wish to, out of sight and hearing of a members of staff if necessary. A typical monitoring visit might include time spent in the kitchens, workshops, accommodation blocks, recreation areas, healthcare centre and chaplaincy.
Steve Brine said: “It was good to meet Mr Somerville today and discuss the findings of his report in detail as the prison plans its next steps in serious improvement.”
