Steve Brine and George Beckett meet PO campaigner.
Prospective Winchester MP, Steve Brine, and Winchester Council leader, George Beckett recently met with a tireless Post Office campaigner as opposition to the move to WH Smith grows - again.
Miss Lawrence of St Cross, Winchester, has been a thorn in the side of the authorities and a constant correspondent on the subject and recently handed a petition to Steve Brine against the proposed move.
Local people continue to pinch themselves at news the city’s main Post Office in Middle Brook Street is to close – and services be transferred to WH Smith in the High Street as part of a national move by Royal Mail.
Steve Brine says; “My post bag and inbox is red hot on this issue, people think it’s some kind of April fool’s joke! Sadly however, it’s not and the Post Office have confirmed to me their intention to move into Smith’s sometime in the Spring of next year. A city the size of Winchester demands a full size central Post Office offering the full range of services, not a scaled down version squeezed into WH Smith. We already have queues out the door in Middle Brook Street – all hell will break loose on pension day each week if this move goes ahead.
“I will continue to pass all comments received onto the Post Office and keep people informed of the latest news as I hear it.”
