Steve Brine is backing a campaign to retain the annual MOT following evidence from a number of leading motoring organisations.
Both the AA and the RAC have shown concern at proposals to change the time limit of MOTs from one year, as they are currently, to three years, and the Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP agrees with them.
Steve said: "I understand that in these times any announcement which indicates the struggling motorist may be able to save money will initially be seen as welcome. However, I am aware that despite the improvements in modern cars, many crucial safety aspects, such the tread depth need to be considered, and in my view formally checked annually.
"I know the last time this suggestion came up, it was dropped due to safety concerns, and road safety issues must always take precedence over saving money, however uncomfortable I recognise that decision may be to many."
