Green Winchester Survery - 'Our Plan'

HOUSING

We must make better progress on the retro-fitting of existing housing stock; both to reduce emissions and tackle fuel poverty. As a green homes champion I work in Parliament to drive public funding for energy efficiency schemes, bring forward the Future Homes Standard and enable local authorities to develop local net zero energy plans.

DEFORESTATION

Last year, over 11,000 square kilometres of the Amazon were lost to deforestation so I welcome our banning the use of certain commodities associated with illegal deforestation. I want to bar financial institutions from providing services to commercial enterprises that illegally deforest land.

BUS BACK BETTER

Hampshire County Council has signed up to the Government’s National Bus Strategy setting out a vision for cleaner, greener - and more regular - bus services. Generous Government funding in this area means we have an opportunity to transform bus services that is greater than it has ever been.

JET ZERO

We believe in sustainable aviation and have launched a £3m competition to fund research into electric and hydrogen aircraft to help it reach net zero by 2050. I am working with Southampton Airport and Ministers to see how our new ‘Freeport’ can be involved. www.sustainableaviation.co.uk

ON THE VERGE OF CHANGE

Working with local residents we want to widen initiatives such as #noMowMay which seeks to bring alive our roadside verges. We need a sensible plan that protects sight lines for drivers and cyclists as well as this vital home for wildlife; including pollinators.

SCHOOLS LEAD THE WAY

More than a dozen schools in our constituency are set to benefit from the Government funded Carbon Reduction Programme. New double-glazed windows, new gas boilers (to replace oil) and installation of rooftop solar PV are all part of a £29m plan.
