Hampshire County Council is currently seeking residents' views on how Hampshire's Library Service will look through (and beyond) 2020.
Steve Brine said: "The council is holding a consultation which invites feedback on proposals set out in their draft Library Strategy and it could have implications for Alresford Library.
"I specifically say 'could' because, although I dare say you have received messages painting an altogether more apocalyptic view, the exercise at this stage merely seeks views on which category of library each area has."
Alresford is currently in Tier 3 but the draft strategy says...
"... we are proposing to reduce the number of Tier 3 static libraries that we run. Some may close while others could transfer to be run by local community groups."
Decisions about individual libraries will be based on the following criteria:
USAGE: the number of users at the library and patterns of library services used
COMMUNITY NEEDS: taking account of educational, ethnic, social and economic backgrounds
ACCESS: whether there are any other libraries nearby
BUILDING: the quality and location of buildings
VALUE FOR MONEY: running costs compared to similar libraries
Steve continued: "If you use Alresford Library (as I do very regularly with my kids), feel it's a valued part of our community and would agree that there is no other provision anywhere near the town, now is the time to speak up. I understand any specific proposals would be subject to specific future consultation but, right now, Alresford Library needs us.
"You can access the Hampshire Library Service Consultation here but be quick, the consultation period runs from Monday 2 November 2015 until Saturday 16 January 2016.
"This is obviously a local council matter but I feel it's important to my constituents in Alresford and wanted to highlight the issue to you so you at least have the option to take part."
