Winchester's revered Blue Apple Theatre put on a very special show (Weds 24 April) in the Houses of Parliament.
Local MP Steve Brine organised for the company, which showcases the talents of actors with learning disabilities, to perform in Speaker's House. It is thought to be only the second time a play has been performed in the Palace of Westminster.
The cast of seven presented 'Living without fear' - which shows through powerful stories the experiences of young adults with learning disabilities trying to lead independent lives in the face of harassment, mate crime and prejudice - for an audience which included Culture Secretary Maria Miller MP and Disabilities Minister Esther McVey MP. Veteran Labour MP Anne Begg also attended as did the new Chief Constable from Hampshire Police and Chief Constables from 2 other counties.
Jane Jessop from Blue Apple Theatre said; "This was a remarkable evening with warm memories and a wonderful opportunity for the company. I am incredibly proud of our talented performers, who, acting as a voice for their peers, took this important play right into the heart of Parliament and played to an audience full of people who can make a difference.
They provoked us to think again about ability, disability and vulnerability in the wonderful setting of Speaker's House and moved some of the audience to tears as they drew attention to important and difficult issues."
Steve Brine MP added; "This was a very special evening which I know had a profound impact on everyone present. It brought what are everyday issues for many young people living with learning disabilities to the very heart of Parliament which can only be a good thing. There was a lovely moment during one particularly sombre scene when we could hear the faint chimes of Big Ben right above Speaker's House which added even more to the atmosphere.
"Blue Apple is not just a Winchester phenomenon, it is a national phenomenon. I am so proud of how they performed and how they touched a whole new audience with this show."
After the show, the cast got to take a tour inside the House of Commons chamber.
