Winchester and Chandler's Ford MP Steve Brine has acted after worried constituents approached him concerned about the compulsory registration of septic tanks.
As things stand, owners may be fined if they have failed to register their tank, but there has been frustration that this has not been publicised.
Steve said: "A number of constituents have approached me on this, and they are quite rightly concerned. As they point out, the information is only there if you actively look for it, and the information is even harder to come by if an owner is not online."
It was only after an article in the Hampshire Chronicle highlighted the issue that local residents came forward to contact their MP.
Steve continued: "I have been pushing the Environment Agency hard on this. They now assure me that they will work with Defra to see whether the approach is still appropriate and I will be keeping my eye on this as will a good number of my constituents."
Steve is aware that septic tank owners will be contacted in January 2012, and would like to hear from anyone locally who is similarly concerned about the problem.
