The 2018 Winchester Criterium and Cyclefest brought excitement and top quality sport to the streets of Winchester today, Sunday 10th June.
Local MP Steve Brine and his son William were in town to meet many of the exhibitors at the largest Cyclefest so far and to watch some of the thrilling races around the ancient city streets.
Now in its sixth year, the event is sponsored by Hargroves Cycles and supported by British Cycling, South Downs National Park, Winchester BID, My Journey and Winchester City Council. This years event began with a Family Ride before serious racing got underway just after 11 o'clock.
Steve said; "We love this event and this year had extra resonance after the launch last month of Cycle Winchester. The way the City Council has supported this and pushed it forward means there could not be a more solid foundation on which to build.
"The thrill of seeing cycle races at such speed through the city centre streets is always impressive and congratulations to everyone involved, some of the races were really close and hard fought.
Winchester cycling club Venta were in the Broadway throughout the day telling people about the club and its many events.
Races, which this year included the regional championships, included a youth race for Under 8s, Under 10s, Under 12s, Under 14s and Mens category 3/4 contest. After lunch the Criterium saw Under 16s Regional Championships for girls and boys followed by the elite categories of both. Podium presentations concluded the day in front of large crowds in the city centre.
