Steve Brine dropped into the Great Hall on Friday 22nd June for the launch of the new Safer Places scheme.
The Safer Places scheme aims to improve the experience of vulnerable people in the community, providing vulnerable people, and particularly those with a learning disability, with a safe place to go to where help can be summoned if they are feeling scared or upset while out on their own in the community.
Local MP Steve Brine said: "Winchester is a safe place to live in and visit but unfortunately vulnerable people sometimes might be victims of bullying or harassment as they are out and about. There might also be occasions when they become lost or separated from their carer or simply disorientated.
"As soon as I heard about Safer Places, everything clicked straight away. It is simple and easily identifiable, and I've decided to put my money where my mouth is and ensure that my 9 Stockbridge Road office, right in the heart of Fulflood, is now an official Safe Place."
The scheme provides a safe place to go to where a phone call can be made for the vulnerable person to someone they trust, who will either come and collect them or advise them on what they need to do.
Vulnerable people can carry a Safer Places card with them and if needed, they can show this card to the Safe Place staff who will make the phone call for them.
As well as hearing from organisers, alongside Cllr Felicity Hindson and a few words from Steve, the launch was treated to a short performance from Hamlet from members of the Blue Apple Theatre Company, which is part of Winchester Mencap, which helped to set up the scheme.
The Safe Places in the scheme are easily identified by the yellow logo displayed in the front window.
