Steve Brine joined a host of councillors and VIPs at the Guildhall on Wednesday 20th May, as the annual Mayor-Making ceremony bade farewell to Eileen Berry.
Cllr Berry, who represents the Weeke and Teg Down area on Winchester City Council, had been the 815th 'First Citizen' of the city, carrying the role with distinction.
She stood down last night to be replaced by Cllr Angela Clear, in a ceremony full of the dignity and decorum that befits the city.
Speaking afterwards, the MP for Winchester said: "It's always a privilege to witness living history in Winchester and the Mayoralty is a classic example.
"Eileen Berry has been the best Mayor in memory and has brought a breath of fresh air to a role that survived unchanged in more than 800 years.
"We owe her a huge vote of thanks for a job well done and wish Angela Clear all the best for her year to come."
Cllr Berry will now continue to represent her St Barnabas ward, having been re-elected with an increased majority on Thursday 7th May.
