Steve Brine has called on Winchester City Council to enforce rules on pavement parking following a meeting with a disabled constituent in the city.
The Winchester MP met with Angela Moody at a recent surgery, where she outlined the problems she encounters trying to cross roads and navigate her way around the city when vehicles have parked on specially designed dropped kerbs.
Ms Moody, who lives in Colebrook Street, said: "I asked to meet with Steve Brine so that I could explain just how difficult I, and other disabled residents, find it to safely cross roads when cars and vans park so inconsiderately.
"Crossing roads and just getting about in a bustling city centre such as ours is difficult enough, even with my assistance dog Odessa, and if dropped kerbs are blocked off it simply means that wheelchair access is not possible."
Steve Brine said: "I was very grateful that Angela came to see me to highlight this problem, and it is actually far more serious than it sounds at first. A poorly parked vehicle can be a simple nuisance to most of us, but for wheelchair users and also their assistance dogs, it can mean they cannot safely move from the road to the pavement.
"This is particularly dangerous at night time, and I formally wrote to Winchester City Council to ask them to do much more to enforce what is already existing legislation.
"Their reply is encouraging, particularly with regard to the use of Fixed Penalty Notices in the most serious cases, and this is something I will be keeping a close eye on."
