Steve Brine has welcomed a new weekly health walk which has started in Stanmore, expanding the Winchester Health Walks programme.
Winchester Health Walks is part of 'Walking for Health', England's largest network of health walk schemes. Run by the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support, it helps people to lead a more active lifestyle. These are free group walks aimed at encouraging those who are not active or who have a low activity level to become more active by walking in their local area.
Lydia Lockhart, Winchester City Council's Active Lifestyle Officer, coordinates the Winchester Health Walks. She said: "These walks not only help people to become more active in a social environment, they also allow people to discover local walks which they may have not been aware of."
The Stanmore Health Walk is every Wednesday all year round, meeting at The Carroll Centre, Somers Road, at 1.30pm. The walks are an hour long, during which the group covers approximately two and a half miles.
Cllr Robert Humby, Deputy Leader of Winchester City Council with portfolio responsibilities for sport and physical activity, said: "This new walk supports the health walks which are already taking place in the local area, such as the one in Weeke and the two in the centre of Winchester, giving people even more opportunities to become more active in their neighbourhood."
City MP Steve Brine said: "I think this is a great idea, and as well as being healthy provides a fantastic social opportunity too. I'm sure the take-up will be great, and adds to successful walks organised elsewhere across the city."
