Public Health England's 2016 Change4Life Sugar Smart campaign has now been launched, and a special smart app helping people with their sugar intake has proved hugely successful already.
The Sugar Smart app was leading the app charts with over 300,000 downloads this week, as the Sugar Smart campaign highlights new guidance on the maximum amount of sugar children should be consuming, making it easier to help busy families make healthier choices.
Steve Brine said: "Five million Sugar Smart information packs are being distributed to primary school children through schools, local authorities and retailers. The app in particular seems to have captured the public's imagination as it allows people to scan the barcodes of over 75,000 everyday food or drink products, showing how much sugar is in them.
The Sugar Smart campaign runs until mid-February, and all 152 local authorities, 20 NGOs, 42 Housing Associations and 500 pharmacies are engaged with the campaign.
The campaign also has the support of five major retailers (Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and The Co-operative Food), and there will be 50 days of road show activity in shopping centres across England, to encourage people to download and use the new Sugar Smart app.
Steve continued: "The Sugar Smart campaign is part of the broader Change4Life programme which supports the Government's work to reduce childhood obesity, by encouraging families to eat well and move more. On top of this, I am looking forward to the Government bringing forward its Childhood Obestity Strategy shortly."
