Steve Brine has welcomed news that University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust want to consolidate their service and have plans to launch a major project to create Southampton Children's Hospital.
The vision is to build a dedicated state-of-the-art children's hospital which will bring all paediatric services under one roof for the first time, and with the project due for completion in 2020, the stunning building will be a centre of excellence for children on the south coast and beyond.
The children's hospital will be linked to Southampton General Hospital but will be purpose built with a separate entrance to provide a worthy home to their specialist, internationally renowned children's services. These include cardiac surgery, neuroscience, oncology and a world-leading paediatric intensive care unit.
The Trust has a proud history of delivering world-class healthcare for children in the region and the new £70 million building will offer the highest quality hospital environment to our young people, from babies to teenagers.
Winchester & Chandler's Ford MP Steve Brine said: "This is really exciting news and I am delighted to hear that following the success of the Have a Heart campaign earlier this year, Southampton is really pulling out the stops in terms of ambition and drive."
The children's hospital will be situated on the east side of Southampton General Hospital with an exclusive entrance on B level and connected to the main hospital via a link corridor. It will be identified by its child-friendly branding and an environment designed specifically for young patients and their families.
