Local MP Steve Brine used a Commons debate to welcome vital improvement works taking place at Winchester Railway Station this Summer.
Speaking in a short Westminster Hall debate (pictured) about disabled access to rail travel (on Weds 3 July 2013) led by his Conservative colleague Rory Stewart MP, Mr Brine praised the construction of a new footbridge with a lift on each platform which will start in July and are expected to be completed in December of this year.
Steve said; "Rail travel is increasingly popular, which is welcome on many levels, but we need a railway that is safe, reliable and fit for the 21st century and that means making it fully accessible for disabled and elderly travellers but also for those weighed down with lots of luggage such as tourists visiting our the city.
"We've asked for these improvements for some time now so it's great they're happening and I know they will be warmly welcomed by my constituents, and the many visitors, who use Winchester Railway Station each year."
Mr Brine reminded MPs that, at present, those unable to cross the line via the steps and subway are often known to use taxis which involve a trip around part of the city's one-way system.
