Steve Brine popped into the Great Hall on Thursday 31st January to take a look at a very special model of Winchester.
Winchester 1870 represents the city as it was back in Victorian times, at a point in our history when the local population numbered 13,000- less than half of what it is now. Painstakingly put together by local man Roger Brown, a former Hampshire County Council employee, the model took nine years to complete. It is formed of twenty sections and is based on the Ordnance Survey map surveyed in 1869-70 by Captain Sanford and Captain James of the Royal Engineers.
Speaking afterwards, Steve said: "This is a fantastic model, and really fascinating for anyone with an interest in our past. I can only congratulate Roger Brown, who has put such a lot of effort into this it is unreal.
"Everyone I saw at the exhibition was awestruck and I am sure many more local people will derive huge enjoyment from the work."
The model is on display until 16th February.
