Jan Crispin has spoken to Steve Brine about rehabilitation for people with spinal injuries as she raises funds for the Southern Spinal Injuries Trust.
Jan, who lives in Compton, and her partner had a road traffic accident 3 years ago on their way home from a visit to their family in Cornwall. It was a very serious accident, and among other injuries, Jan broke her neck in 2 places. As a result, she is paralysed from the shoulders down, with limited movement in her arms but no movement in her hands, torso and legs.
Jan, who relies on her partner and 24 hour support workers to help with daily tasks, told Steve: "
Whilst I am raising money for the Salisbury Spinal Unit and individuals with spinal injuries. I am also raising awareness of this devastating injury that could happen to anyone reading this in a split second.
"For me it was a car crash caused by another driver's 'momentary lapse of concentration'. For others it was a fall in the garden, a trip down the stairs and another over a dog's lead. The Southern Spinal Injuries Trust helps people rebuild their lives and live a fuller more independent life."
SSIT provides financial support to both the Salisbury Spinal Unit and individuals with a spinal injury by fundraising to supply equipment. The organisation recently raised the funds to buy an adapted minibus for the Spinal Unit to enable staff to take patients out as part of their rehabillitation.
