Winchester MP Steve Brine made a surprise visit to the Winchester Litter Pickers 'Ball' on Friday 5th October 2012.
The annual event, held to thank the volunteers, took place at St Lawrence Church Hall in Colebrook Street.
Steve dropped in to thank the volunteers and said: "It's easy to think a place like Winchester should have a volunteer team of litter pickers and to believe it always will but these things don't happen by chance. They take a lot of organising and commitment from a large number of people and I wanted to drop in to thank David Jones and his team for all they do in the city.
"My daughter Emily is already an eager 'picker' and while we are still working on what she should - and should not - pick up, one of the greatest compliments I can pay the Winchester Litter Pickers is to let them know their good work is being passed on as a natural instinct to the next generation."
David Jones added: "Winchester Litter Pickers are an expanding group of volunteers who take pride in their beautiful city by regularly tidying high profile visitor areas such as the station approaches and the Cathedral Outer Close as well as shopping areas and open spaces in the larger housing estates.
"Each autumn we hold a party to thank our members, supporters, sympathisers and sponsors and are very appreciative that our MP Steve Brine was able to join us this year and to thank us for our work.
"We are always looking for new active members and the support of politicians, church leaders and other important members of society plays a vital role in the effective recruitment of volunteers."
