Steve Brine has welcomed news that the Defence budget will receive an additional £1 billion this year and next, saying that the increase is justified by intensified threats and a more complex and unpredictable world.
With more state-based threats, insurgent terrorism, technological and geopolitical instability, the Winchester & Chandler’s Ford MP said that the character of warfare is constantly changing, with cyber attacks, fake news, nerve agents and assassinations, and facing this our world-class Armed Forces must have the capabilities they need to protect us at home and abroad.
He said: “This investment will allow us to prioritise key capabilities, including offensive cyber, anti-submarine warfare, and the nuclear deterrent.
“It also means that we can avoid damaging cuts to our force structure, not delete any capability, not have to reduce our global posture and not reduce the size of the Armed Forces. Fundamentally, it will ensure that our Armed Forces can continue to operate around the world keeping us all safe.”
